Sweat it Out: Top Cozumel Gyms

Working out while on vacation or traveling is something I genuinely look forward to—a new studio, a new experience, and a chance to sweat it out with new people. I love discovering the best workout spots no matter where I am, especially when I am staying in one place for an extended period.

In tropical climates like Cozumel, the weather can sometimes be too hot for outdoor exercise, making indoor studios a great option. These workout studios also offer an opportunity to socialize and feel part of a community. Plus, when I am constantly on the move and adjusting to new routines, I sometimes lack the motivation to work out on my own, so having someone to push me through it is really helpful.

If you're feeling the same and heading to this Caribbean island soon, look no further for all the information and insights you need on the best Cozumel gyms and workout spots!

Tip: Cozumel is home to the seasonal Iron Man taking place every September. Therefore it has the perfect landscape for running along the water, bicycling around the coast of the island, and swimming laps in the ocean (you will see many people open water training just past the pier after Stingray Beach).

Best Cozumel Gyms: Workout Classes

Inova Pilates Studio:

The first spot on the best Cozumel gyms list is a small reformer Pilates studio specializing in spine health, posture, muscle function, and control. A towel and socks are required to attend. I found the studio to be extremely clean and bright, and the class was very small (three others and myself), which was excellent for an instructor-to-student ratio. The studio is air-conditioned with plenty of natural light and nature encompassing the small studio.

The class was entirely in Spanish, but if you do not understand Spanish, the instructors know enough English to help you. I enjoyed my class; although it was more slow-paced than I am used to, it was very focused on aligning your body properly. This is the perfect spot for Pilates beginners and those looking for a more slow-burn class.

Inride Cycling Studio:

A small indoor cycle studio located inside Ego Gym. You do need click-in cycle shoes for this class. Shoes are available in the studio to rent for the class. I also recommend bringing a towel as you will get very sweaty. There is an air conditioner and fans.

The class was entirely in Spanish, but if you do not understand Spanish, the instructor will repeat keywords in English for you. As long as you know "left" (izquierda), "right" (derecha), "up" (arriba), "back" (atrás), and numbers 1-3, you should be fine.

I absolutely loved my class—it was upbeat, energetic, and overall a warm and helpful group of regulars in attendance. Yanin, the instructor, is funny and motivating throughout the class. Going to the class during a Mexican Karaoke-themed class was the best coincidence. Everyone was singing along to classic songs while pedaling and sweating to the beat. This is a great class for those looking for a more personal experience with a tight-knit community.

Rebel Pilates:

A small reformer Pilates studio in the heart of Benito Juarez Park. This was by far my favorite workout class in Cozumel. The instructor was phenomenal and walked us through each set. The class was challenging, and the small class size made it feel like we were all in it together. I enjoyed the ballet-esque move set we used to work our glutes. This is a studio I could see myself coming back to monthly. A 10/10 Pilates studio.

Classes can be taught in English or Spanish. The room is air-conditioned and has an extra fan as well.

General Information on Cozumel

Best Time to Visit:

Cozumel is great to visit 365 days a year, but I think the best time is March to early June–after peak season and before the real rainy season begins. Peak season is December-February so expect it to be busy. Rainy and hurricane season is mostly July-November but of course, it can expand into before or after those months. I have been here during March, April, May, June, and July.

How to Get to Cozumel:

  • Flying (the best option): Cozumel has an airport right on the island that is located only 3-4 km from downtown San Miguel.

  • Ferry: You can take the 45-minute passenger ferry into Cozumel from Playa del Carmen. This ferry runs every hour with 3 companies running them: Winjet (orange) Xcaret (blue) and Ultramar (yellow). Check the sites for updated schedules and pricing.

Mode of Transport in Cozumel:

Taxi, bicycle, motorbike. Cozumel is very walkable and transport is only really needed to tour the entire island or to reach specific beach clubs or beaches that are further away. I took 1 taxi during my time here and it was from the airport. Motorbikes are around $350-450 pesos daily. Bicycles are around 250 pesos.

Where to Stay:

I recommend staying right in San Miguel to be within walking distance of nearly everything you need. The beaches, however, will be a bit farther by foot or you can opt to rent a motorbike or bicycle.
