STEP 1: CHOOSE YOUR MODE OF TRANSPORTATION

THE OPTIONS:

The total travel time from Valladolid to Merida is around 2 hours and 25 minutes (160 KM). You can take a private taxi or the ADO bus to get between the two.

  • PRIVATE TAXI:

    • Valladolid and Merida are only a quick 2 hours from one another, which may make a taxi sound like a tempting option. However, the cost of the taxi can be high for those travelers who are venturing on a budget—upwards of 100-130 USD. If you have a lot of luggage or are traveling with 1-2 people, this option might not be ideal. However, if you do not mind spending extra money and prefer a more private ride, it could be a good choice for you!

  • ADO BUS: The better budget-friendly option!

    • ADO is one of the largest Mexican bus companies with cheap and efficient routes around the Yucatan Peninsula, including from Valladolid to Merida. Prices vary depending on the day and time. I suggest booking ahead to secure your ticket for the desired day and time. ADO frequently offers discounts on random days and times, so if you are looking for a deal and do not mind when you travel, be sure to list the buses from cheapest to most expensive. My ticket from Valladolid to Merida was 170 pesos. If you prefer a slightly faster route, you can choose the “ADO Conecta,” a shared van, best for people with less luggage.

The ADO Bus Experience

The location of the Merida ADO station is here. Merida has a few other stations, so make sure to double-check which location you are coming into when you book your ticket. You can also take a bus directly to the Merida Airport.

Tips for using the ADO website

Directions for the ADO website

After searching your route on the ADO website, click “ver detalle” (see details)

and a bottom section should show (see photo as an example). Click “ver mapa,” and your screen should look like the next photo…

P.S. If you have suitcases, make sure the small suitcase icon is shown (I have circled this in pink)–not all buses have suitcase space.

The Map for each bus route on the ADO site.

This is the second screen that will pop up after clicking “ver mapa.

  • Salida: This is your origin or where you are getting the bus from.

  • Llegada: This is your destination.

  • The duration of your bus can be found above the purple box.

  • Stops along your route can be found under the purple box.

Tip: Be sure to download your ticket to your phone in case the service is spotty.

Since you already have your ticket, go through the front doors, past the ticket counters, and take a seat in the waiting area. Your bus will populate the television screen above the doorway outside when it has arrived. If you are unsure or it is getting closer to your departure time, you can always ask an attendant for help.

The ADO bus

HOW LONG IS THE BUS?

  • The bus ride is around 2 hours and 25 minutes.

WHERE DOES BAGGAGE GO?

  • Larger bags, suitcases, and any bag with wheels must go under the bus. My suitcases were locked with a built-in combination lock (thank you TUMI) or with a mini padlock between zippers.

  • All my valuables, including money, were in my backpack, which I kept near my feet throughout the bus ride. The bus was air-conditioned with cozy seats, adjustable shades, TV screens showing a movie (we had Paris Can Wait with Spanish subtitles), and a bathroom at the back.

Pro Tip: Not all people sit in assigned seats so be sure to get on the bus early! Sit further from the bathroom if possible… :)

IS THE BUS SAFE?

  • I have traveled numerous bus routes across the Yucatan Peninsula without any moments of uncertainty or nervousness. I often noticed solo young female travelers on my buses, which speaks volumes. However, I recommend extra caution as you should when traveling anywhere. Avoid riding buses at night or arriving after dark at your destination. If you are a heavy sleeper, it is best not to nap on the bus. Follow basic safety rules like keeping money discreet and avoiding conflicts with strangers.

STEP 2: ARRIVE IN Merida & TRANSFER TO ACCOMMODATION

Congrats you have made it from Valladolid to Merida!

The ADO bus drops you at the official Merida ADO station in Centro, found here. Taxis are awaiting your arrival out front to take you to your accommodation. Be sure to agree to a price BEFORE getting into a Taxi. I found the taxi prices here to be overpriced and opted to walk to my accommodation 15 minutes or so away. If you have a lot of luggage, I would reconsider walking— it is hot, sweaty, and can be a tad sketchy, depending on which neighborhood you stroll through.

Note: Transportation throughout the Yucatán Peninsula is on its way to becoming more accessible with the new Tren Maya Railway. Head here for more information and to stay up to date on which routes are open now!

Wondering Where to Stay?

The best area to stay in Merida is either near the Plaza Grande area or along the Paseo de Montejo road. Plaza Grande will offer a more city and bustling atmosphere whereas Paseo de Montejo will offer a more ‘financial district’ or high-end feel with old colonial mansions lining the streets. I have listed some of the best options below!
