Koh Phi Phi to Koh Lanta

Traveling from Koh Phi Phi to Koh Lanta is as easy as taking a 30-minute to 1-hour ferry between the two islands.

Types of Ferries Available:

Two types of ferries, smaller speedboats, and a small ferry, operate between Koh Phi Phi and Koh Lanta.

The ferry can accommodate more passengers, as it is larger and more spacious. However, it is slightly slower, taking at least one hour to travel between the two islands. The ferry is also the more affordable option, costing around 13 USD.

Speedboats are faster but depend on weather conditions; rough waters can make for a bumpy ride. The average travel time is approximately 30–45 minutes, and speedboats are typically more expensive, starting at 20 USD.

Pro Tip: If you ask around the pier, you can likely charter a private boat between the two.

Ferry Ports & Companies:

The Ferry Companies:

  • Bundhaya Speed Boat (Speedboat) - I prefer this company!

  • Chaokoh Travel Center (Ferry)

  • Jolly Travel (Speedboat)

  • Koh Ngai Camping (Speedboat)

  • Lanta Petpailin (Ferry)

  • PP All Seasons Travel and Tour (Speedboat)

  • Satun Pakbara Speed Boat Club (Speedboat)

  • Tigerline Travel (Speedboat)

Pro Tip: All boats usually have 1 β€œchecked” bag and 1 personal bag included.

Ferry Schedule & Frequency

  • During the high season (December to March/April) ferries run at 9:30 AM, 11:00 AM, 11:30 AM, 12:30 PM, 1:00 PM, 1:30 PM, 3:00 PM, and 4:00 PM.

  • Ferries will be less frequent during the monsoon season, around 8 or so per day, and will be more affected by the weather.

Ferry Ticket Costs

  • Ticket prices vary between seasons, ferry types, companies, etc., but most often fall between 13 to 26 USD.

  • I prefer booking my ferry tickets through 12GoAsia. They list every ferry company operating for a specific date, alongside the times, prices, etc. By booking through them, you have a direct point of contact in case something goes wrong with your ferry transfer.

  • If you prefer, you can also purchase tickets through the ferry company’s FB, WhatsApp, or website.

How to Get to the Ferry Terminals

  • To arrive at the ferry port in Koh Phi Phi, you will have to walkβ€”no motorized vehicles are on the island.

  • For Koh Lanta, you can either hire a taxi to the ferry port through your accomodation or walk if you are staying nearby. If you book through 12GoAsia, you can sometimes opt for a ticket that includes a β€œtransfer” from your accommodation. These transfers are often shared and can be cheaper than other booking methods. I reccomend messaging specific companies to see if they offer this option as well.

Travel Tips for a Smooth Journey

  • The best time to travel is outside the monsoon season (September until the end of November). This gives you a better chance at calmer waters and clear skies.

  • I always recommend packing snacks and water for the ride, even for this short journey just in case!

  • Pack some wipes to clean your seat and hands before eating.

  • I did not have a restroom on my ferry ride, so keep this in mind.

  • Download a book, podcast, music, etc., to keep you busy during your journey. If you choose music or a podcast, be sure to pack earphones.

  • Bring some seasickness-prevention items like the bracelets, tablets, etc. It’s always best to be safe than sorry! I always find sitting in the middle of the boat is better for less impact when the boat hits waves.

  • If you start feeling sick, I recommend going outside for fresh air and focusing on the horizon. Staying still and taking deep breaths can make a big difference. Personally, I like to put in my earphones, close my eyes, and concentrate on my breathing.

  • This ferry is one of the easiest to travel in Thailand and the quickest!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I bring luggage with me on the ferry?

  • Yes, most companies will ask how many pieces of luggage you have before purchasing the ticket. It is usually 1 piece of luggage (larger bags) per person. Your larger bags will sometimes be stored elsewhere, so be sure to keep all valuables with you in your seat.

How much is the ferry from Koh Lanta to Koh Phi Phi?

  • Usually between 13 USD (standard ferry) to 20-25 USD (speedboat). Season and boat company taken will affect the price of the ticket.

How long is the ferry from Phi Phi to Koh Lanta?

  • 30 minutes - 1 hour, weather dependent.

How do I go to Koh Lanta from Phi Phi?

  • Simply reverse the ferry route to go between the two islands!

Is Koh Lanta better than Koh Phi Phi?

  • I prefer Koh Lanta because it is much more laid back and liveable. Koh Phi Phi is beautiful, do not get me wrong, but it is tiny, extremely crowded, and quite loud from the bars. The accommodations on Koh Phi Phi are not that great and quite expensive for what they areβ€”you can get more for your dollar on Koh Lanta. I think both are worth the visit, but I would choose Koh Lanta over Koh Phi Phi. You can always take a day trip from Koh Lanta to Koh Phi Phi instead.

Where Should I Stay in Koh Lanta?

I recommend staying in the northern part of Koh Lanta, where you will be closer to dive shops, the ferry and boat port (where all the diving boats are docked), and the beautiful Khlong Dao Beach. This location also makes it easier to avoid paying for a taxi to and from the ferry port, as it’s within walking distance if you don’t mind a little exercise. If you prefer a more secluded, vacation vibe, you can opt for the higher-end accommodations towards the southern end of the island, between Nui Beach and Mu Ko Lanta National Park.

When is the best time to visit either island?

Monsoon Season: May/June - October | Dry Months: December - March

The best time to visit each island is outside of the monsoon season, during the driest months (December until March). November and April are okay months to visit, although they are a mix of wet and dry. October to May is considered the high season and the best months for scuba diving and snorkeling. I reccomend visiting the island during this time for the best chance of sunshine!

Is it safe?

I felt safe on both Koh Lanta and Koh Phi Phi, but I did not drink or consume any substances. I recommend staying up to date with your country’s travel advisories. Follow basic rules of safety while traveling in addition to:

  • Always triple-check vaccination requirements and recommendations for countries. Some potential illnesses include Typhoid and Hepatitis A.

  • Pack mosquito spray to protect yourself from Dengue and Malaria. There has been a recent uptick in cases of Dengue on the island.

  • Wear your helmet when riding your motorbike in Koh Lanta. So many people do not wear helmets, which could save your life.

  • Watch for street dogs while driving in Koh Lanta!

  • DO NOT drink the tap water. Keep your mouth closed in the shower and even use bottled water for toothbrushing, especially if you have a sensitive stomach like me!

  • Mistakes can happen, so I recommend always having some form of travel medical insurance. Safety Wing is by far the best travel medical insurance. It has saved me numerous times by covering hospital visits when I was sick during my travels in Asia.

  • Get an eSIMβ€”so you do not get lost navigating your way. I always use Airalo for my eSims.

  • Emergency Contact Number: Police: 191 | Fire: 199 | Ambulance: 1669

    • You can find a complete list of Thailand’s Emergency #’s here.
